National Campaign Issues
This also falls into the "To be determined" category. What will the issues be in 2010 and 2012? Will the other two parties consider working on the real issues, or will they try to pass legislation that favors the special interest groups and powerful interests that support their campaigns? I know restoring our constitutional framework is a top Libertarian issue.
Although we can not dictate the issues the Libertarian party will select, our local affiliate does have a voice, and that voice will be heard. If enough of the local affiliates have the same concern that concern may be adopted as a national issue by the Libertarian party. I think that is a good reason to have good communications with the other Florida Libertarian affiliates, and with the state Libertarian party.
We can only Watch as the national government tries to impose several huge pieces of legislation on all Americans, legislation that will effect all future generations of Americans.
While we have no way of knowing what the national campaign issues will be in 2012, we do know what are the most important issues at the present time.
The economy
Will the measures the government has taken be sufficient to produce a real recovery? Should the government be spending these huge amounts of money for any legislation, before the economy has recovered? That does not seem to be a prudent policy does it?
Health Care
Even though the administration has been telling us about all of the problems our health care system has, all of us know that wealthy people from all over the world come here for health care when they have a serious problem. Do we want to scrap that system in favor of one that has been assembled in less than a year? A brand new health care system comprised of 1000 pages of complicated legislation many congressmen have not even read?
Energy
During the last presidential campaign both candidates promised us energy independence. We desperately need to have our own energy supply. At this time we are importing 75 percent of our oil, and borrowing money from China to pay for it. That situation can not be sustained. We need a workable solution, and it isn't because we lack energy resources, we have one of the worlds largest reserves of coal. We also have substantial oil reserves, and during the 70s we had a growing nuclear industry. All of these resources are being put off limits by government environmental regulation.
Cap And Trade
The government is pushing legislation that would impose taxes on all of the utility companies, all of those taxes will be passed down to the consumers in the form of higher utility bills. Is the administrations plan for energy independence to make it too expensive to use?
The Global Warming Treaty
A new global warming treaty is to replace the Kyoto treaty, which wasn't adopted. Will that legislation allow the UN and other countries to tax our government or our industry for pollution? India and China, two of the largest polluters have said they will not sign this treaty. Why should we? Should we even be considering these drastic steps without evaluating the science behind global warming thoroughly?
Immigration
This is a huge issue with all kinds of ramifications, economic, medical, educational, social, and political. There are said to be somewhere between 10 and 20 million illegal aliens living in this country. Some people favor granting them amnesty for entering this country illegally, and then granting them citizenship. That move would also make them eligible for national health care, welfare, food stamps, and all of our other social programs. What then, should we do?
National Dialog
There should be a national dialog on all of these issues, as any one of them will have profound effects on our country for many generations to come. Become engaged, ask questions, join.
