Walton County Libertarians
About Us
We Libertarians are a bit confusing to folks who are used to the other two parties. Are we liberal or conservative? They ask. Actually we are both, as befits a party that strives to represent all Americans. We are liberal in the same way most country people are liberal. It is not the mean, hateful, exclusive liberalism you are familiar with, but a neighborly live and let live liberalism. Libertarians believe that everyone should be free to pursue their dreams, and to live their life anyway they want to, just as long as it doesn't cause harm to their neighbors. We think everyone should try to get along with each other, and if our neighbor needs help we should try to help him. We do not think that helping citizens is a function of the federal government. We think that sort of help is best provided by his state and his community.
We are more fiscally conservative than the Republicans. We want to live our lives in peace and prosperity, and we want you too as well. It doesn't bother us if you enjoy a larger income than we do, we are glad for you, and we don't think your government should make you share with us. If you are in trouble we think the citizens of your community should help you out, but we don't think the government should pass a law guaranteeing you an income, or anything else.
Actually we think the federal government should have a really limited role. They should help provide a framework for commerce, and protect us from attack by our enemies. They don't have a right to take our money without our consent, and they don't have a right to tell any citizen what to do. We figure the state and local governments have sufficient laws to tell us what to do and how to do it, the federal government doesn't need to get involved in our daily lives. You can read about our views at length on the national web site, but that's it in a nut shell.
That is hardly the present situation. The government is involved heavily in our daily lives, and someone up there is working hard to take even more of your freedom away. All we can do as Libertarians is work within the present framework and try to prevent future abuses. That doesn't mean we have to accept the status quo. We will work hard to restore what we have lost, but we do realize that won't happen overnight.
After more than 200 years our country has drifted away from the blue print the founding fathers outlined in the constitution. With each passing year additional regulation has been added by congress. There are many government programs that infringe on our rights as individuals, but are programs people use and depend on. We need to look hard at all of the government programs now in use and determine which ones we must keep, and which ones should be discontinued. The programs we decide to discontinue must be studied carefully so minimum hardship will be imposed on the citizens who depend on those programs, when they are discontinued.
Today congress functions to add new layers of legislation and bureaucracy each year to appease the special interest groups, and powerful financial interests that support each of the political parties. That is why the government seems to be on a run away course.
We need to stop the legislative bulldozer and force congress to do it's real work and deal with the problems in existing government programs. Even more importantly, we need to get the federal governments hand out of our pocket. When the federal government believes that a portion of our income belongs to the government they have strayed from the constitution.
Obviously we can not just stop paying federal taxes. Our country has made guarantees to it's citizens and to other countries that must be honored. We can work to keep the governments hand out of our pocket, and we can force the government to start reducing it's expenditures and living within a real budget. We must instill fiscal responsibility in government. We citizens need to start telling the government what to do.
Let us make a commitment to elect citizens to represent us in Washington. A few good men and women who won't be obligated to any special interests or big corporations.
Our goal should be to elect legislators selected by us, the citizens. We need legislators who are one of us. Men and women who won't have to conduct a poll to learn what we want, and will listen to what we say. The sooner we start, the sooner we can make some progress toward bringing this country back to the blue print of the constitution. We need a few good men, and a few good women. Join our fight for liberty!
The other two parties will tell you that if you vote for libertarians the the other party will win. The only way the good guys can win is if you vote for them. Let's hope the good guys win. You can vote for who ever you want to vote for as a Libertarian. If you register to vote as a Libertarian you may not be able to vote in the primaries, but you can still vote for anyone you want to in the general election. You can vote for a Libertarian for congress, and a Republican or Democrat for president if you wish.
Our party is not a new party. It was founded back in 1971, and is the nations third largest political party. We are happy to report that the Libertarian party has grown over 150 percent this year. Join us in our fight for liberty!
